Joel Rodriguez

  • Executive Creative Director
  • McCannXBC
  • USA

Joel has been fortunate enough to have worked all over the country at the most esteemed agencies in the world.
Born in Nicaragua and fleeing the Contra war, his family would drive to Southern California in a green Fiat when he was 7 years old. It was there where two cultures clashed and somewhere between his craze for Mrs. Pac-Man, the impact of Michael Jackson’s “Beat it” Video, and his mothers poor cooking… you could say he developed his unique style and dry brand of humor.
During his formative years he failed tremendously at math, science, and piano lessons. But he continued to excel in the visual arts. He would later go on to graduate from the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.
In 1998, Joel embarked into the advertising world and over the years he would create memorable work for brands such as Guinness, FedEx, Citi-Bank, Sprint, Nextel, Sony, Adidas, and MTV, to name a few. His work has also picked up an array of international industry awards: Cannes Lions, including Gold, One Show Pencils (Gold, Silver, Bronze), Kelly Awards, Art Directors Club, AICP Best Art Director, EFFIES and many more. His broadcast for Guinness and Nextel earned the distinction of showcasing at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). In 2006, Boards Magazine listed Joel on the International Top Ten Art Directors list, which tallies performances from all of the international awards. Joel believes creative people should always be exploring and trying new disciplines.
Since 2010, he has been working independently and continuing to expand his craft by collaborating with not only advertising agencies, but has also been sought by production houses, collaborating and creating unique work with them. Although an art director by trade, he has asserted himself to longer forms of narrative writing and directing, including a recent 16 minute-film, “Sparrow.”
He lives in Brooklyn NY with his wife and two kids.
